On Saturday, the North Carolina Tar Heels and Baylor Bears will square off in the NCAA Tournament Second Round at Dickies Arena. North Carolina is 25-9 so far this season. On Thursday, the Tar Heels defeated Marquette in the tournament. Baylor is 27-6 on the season and is coming off a rout of Norfolk State in the NCAA tournament.
North Carolina had a difficult November with a number of heartbreaking losses, and they also had a shaky January. Aside from that, the Tar Heels have had an excellent start to the season. North Carolina fell to Virginia Tech in the conference tournament, but bounced back against Marquette on Thursday.
In the first half of Thursday’s tournament opener against Marquette, North Carolina jumped out to a massive 53-25 lead. The Tar Heels then kept the pressure on with a 42-38 run en route to a 95-63 victory. Brady Manek (28 points; 11 rebounds) and Armando Bacot (17 points; 10 rebounds) both had double-doubles.
Baylor lost back-to-back games against Texas Tech and Oklahoma State in January, but they haven’t lost consecutive games all year. The Bears suffered a heartbreaking loss to Oklahoma on March 10, but bounced back with a win over Norfolk State on Thursday.
The Bears had no trouble defeating Norfolk State in the first round of the tournament. Baylor led at halftime 43-27 and went on to win 85-49. In the win, Matthew Mayer led the team in scoring with 22 points and six rebounds.
